48 Hours Golfing in the Murray

Calling all golfers (and families of golfers). Longing for a new golf experience outside of Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra but not sure where to start?

With more than a dozen courses along the Murray River region, there’s no shortage of golfing greens to test your swing – from resort style links to local courses.

Good news, you don’t need to book a full week of annual leave to have a golf experience in The Murray – with serval courses close to each other, a weekend is all you need.

Shake up your morning routine and set your GPS to Albury, a three-hour drive from Melbourne or four hours from Canberra, and you can be parking your car by the clubhouse ready to tee off for a midday session.

Sydneysiders and Melburnians can fly direct into Albury – perfect for when you want to spend more time on the putting greens than getting there via the bitumen.

What are you waiting for? Pack your clubs and tee-off in Albury and Corowa with this guide.

Day 1: Albury Wodonga

Prepare to test your skills along the tree-lined fairways and well placed bunkers of the Commercial Golf Course

If you want to loosen the arms and hips from the drive or flight and practice your swing before you hit the 18-hole championship course, you’ll find a putting green and driving range on site.

For the shortest commute from your accommodation to the greens and clubhouse, check-into the Commercial Golf Resort.

The resort offers fully renovated double, twin and family units with panoramic views over the golf course as well as a gym and fitness centre, snooker room, bowling greens and swimming pool, for those who like to keep active off-the-greens too.

Take a break from the fairways with brunch or lunch on the banks of the Murray River at River Deck Café and dine on seasonal, local produce from the Murray River region, such as ‘Murray Pure’ beef, ‘Rivalea’ pork and Murray Cod.

Put a fine dining experience on your travel plans with dinner at Miss Amelie – one of The Murray’s hatted restaurants and enjoy modern European fare in Wodonga’s historic railway station.

If you’ve allowed time away from the fairways to see the local sights, step-it-out along the Yindyamarra Trail to see sculptures carved by local Aboriginal artists or visit MAMA – one of the most visited art galleries outside of Sydney.

Day 2: Corowa

Pack the clubs in the car and drive to Corowa, 45 minutes east of Albury, located on the New South Wales side of the Murray River.

Choose to chase the little white ball around nine, 18 or 27 holes at Corowa Golf Club.

Check-in to one of the 35 on-course motel rooms to maximise your time on the green and be within walking distance of the clubhouse, complete with a bistro for when you need a mid-game snack.

If you’re travelling with little ones, the clubhouse has you covered with an onsite cinema showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

Refuel after your day hitting, chipping and putting around the golf course with a meal at D’Amico’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria.

This family-run restaurant pairs local wines (read: Rutherglen, Milawa and King Valley to name a few) with pasta, pizza and grande piatta on the menu.

Known as the birthplace of Federation in Australia, allow time to turn the pages of history at the Corowa Federation Museum, with displays covering Corowa’s local history, Aboriginal artefacts and historical agricultural equipment.

Spoil your tastebuds with a local tipple at the Corowa Whisky and Chocolate – a renovated flour mill dating back to the early 1920s, which has a distillery, chocolate factory and onsite café serving breakfast, brunch and lunch.

Golfing on the banks of the Murray is a year-round must with seasonal stay-play deals to keep you coming back. Find your next course here.
